Community Outreach

Students of UMS participate in a number of charitable activities, allowing them to understand and appreciate the need for giving back to the community. Students are well aware that not everybody lives a privileged lifestyle, and are taught that they don’t own the world but share it collectively with others. Students participate in a variety of events which have been outlined below.

  • Academic Excellence

Every year UMS participates in the Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart event with proceeds benefiting the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

  • Terry Fox Run

Students at UMS participate in the Terry Fox Run with proceeds going to the Terry Fox Foundation and cancer research. This has become a popular event held every September.

  • Veterans Association of Markham

The Remembrance Day Poppy Drive is an annual event at UMS. Each year all students are provided with a poppy and a small envelope for a voluntary contribution. We are pleased to present an annual donation to the Veterans Association of Markham.

  • Annual Toy Drive

Each year, the Parent Council and staff of UMS present the Markham Fire Station with a collection of toys and a financial donation. Toys donated are part of a school wide toy drive and monetary proceeds are raised through a variety of fundraising events.

  • Olde Tyme Christmas Parade

With festive parade floats, bands, dance troupes, and the guest of honour, Santa Claus, it is a magical night for all.

  • Markham Santa Claus Parade

The 41st Markham Santa Claus Parade is a Town of Markham event presented by the Rotary Club of Markham Sunrise Inc. and Markham-Unionville Rotary Club (not-for-profit organizations serving the residents and community of Markham, Ontario).

  • Lions Rotary Club

Local Lions Club programs include sight conservation, hearing and speech conservation, diabetes awareness, youth outreach, international relations, environmental issues, and other programs.

  • United Way

For almost four decades, supporting partner agencies has been an integral part of the important work carried out by United Way York Region (UWYR).

  • Five with Drive Foundation

We partner with our supporters in Canada and local organizations abroad to provide compassion and relief to anyone who needs it, regardless of religion, race, gender and socio-economical status.
